Kid Steals Xbox, Uses XBL to Contact Owner to Demand Payment, Brings Down the Wrath of Digg Users

Posted in News, Technology by Daemonhunter on March 23rd, 2008

Follow-up: XboxMoron: The Aftermath

Here is a case of, “check if the guy who you’re stealing a xbox from has a website”. A kid, who appears to be a really, really illiterate and redneck kid, stole a tv, mac powerbook and xbox from the author of this website. Understandably, the guy was pissed, and the first thing he does is check the local pawn store (which was pretty smart), and he gets images of the kid from the cameras in the store.

He calls the police department, and was ignored.

And then, you start realize how stoned and idiotic this kid really is. The kid then proceeds to send voice messages to the author, demanding that he pay to get his Xbox back. Of course, revealing his account name, and his account info in the process. All Xbox 360 owners would know, that in the process of registration, the account is linked with your msn email account, and if the intelligence of the kid is any indication, it is probably full of personal, and most importantly, identifiable information. All the police needs to do it contact Microsoft.

The author then calls the local authorities, who is the Philadelphia Police for him, and whilst waiting for a response gets 2 more messages from the thief.

The thief is believed to still be un-apprehended, and playing CoD 4 apparently.

[UPDATE] If you check out his various account, he looks like he’s 16 or something. If you wanna hear him try his hand at extortion, check out idiot.mp3 [From the website of the guy who got his Xbox stolen].

[UPDATE]Here’s an alleged chat log between a digg user and the thief:

[UPDATE] From what I can see, people are being rather … enthusiastic about this. It looks like this kid’s getting harassed on AIM, whilst he is a thief, it would be better if everyone just called the police, at the same time(lol), the digg post is getting close to 2000 diggs, the Philadelphia Police has to either have no internet connection, has no access to someone with a internet connection or a phone connection to ignore all that. And harassment might be illegal, even at the IM level.

[UPDATE] Youtube comment by UnGraceless

I’m going to run out right now and steal an xbox. That’ll give me the prime learning experience I desperately need!

What I have learned so far.

1. Steal correct power cord.
2. Do not leave incriminating message on xbox account of “former owner”.
3. Find a pawn shop slightly further than a few miles from where crime was committed.
4. Do not post pics of my vag on the intertron. Because if it doesn’t wind up on PerezHilton, it’ll wind up on Digg.

[UPDATE] Ok, this is starting to get out of hand. People are posting his address and high school location on various site. He might be a stoned tool, but his crime is not of such a magnitude that justifies him getting stripped totally of his privacy. Come on guys, he’s just a kid. Call the cops, he gets either a slap on the wrist or sent to juvie. That’s punishment enough.

[UPDATE] Digg comment Chebsi:

DIGGERS! ASSEMBLE!

Yay for fellow marvel comics fan! (lol, the comment refers to the Avengers)

[UPDATE] Digg comment by Cyborg326:

lol @ him deleting all the coments on his youtube video.

[UPDATE]

Digg comment by l0k0

Judging by that voice message he left you (idiot.mp3), you’ll get the last laugh. Natural selection will catch up to him eventually.

Digg comment by Pillage

How much natural selection is involved in inbreeding?

lol, not enough apparently.

Comment from Jesse McPherson, the guy who had his stuff stolen: (well, a someone claiming to be him anyway)

So I agree this is getting out of hand a bit and will be posting an update as soon as the digg effect dies down on my site a bit.

It seems like the kid in the message isn’t the one who actually broke into my house and while he is still a moron for that xbox live message he left, the dogs need to be called off. He has emailed me, he is scared out of his mind, and I will be in contact with his mother shortly.

No, there is no way in hell the dogs are gonna get called off. If we use the digg post as an indicator, there’s about 2000 dogs, the kid’s gonna have to wait for this to die down. I’m going to wait for confirmation, which mean Jesse is gonna have to make a post on his site concerning this matter, so I can confirm that the kid in the picture didn’t do the stealing. Then I’m removing the links to his pages.

[UPDATE] Links Removed, Confirmation: Twitter Post

[UPDATE] If the kid wants to regain what’s remaining of his privacy, he should rat out the guy who stole the xbox, right now. It would divert attention from him, who cares if the guy gets pissed, beats having 2000 people with varying amounts of anger directed at you.

[UPDATE] Digg comment by Metal_Hurlant

Digg. Because none of us are as cruel as all of us.
Srsly, mob. You’re harassing some guy you don’t know on some pretty flimsy grounds. You may want to stop for a second and think about the implicit chain of trust you’re relying on to justify going after this unskilled rapper kid.

Amazing at the time of writing, out of 200 something comments, this guy was the only one to point that out. He was right, I didn’t stop to think about it either.

[UPDATE] From Jesse McPherson’s website

Dear Internet, thanks for having my back. I am amazed at the response I have had. Unfortunately I think this kid only bought the xbox from the actual robber for $200 and then tried to act tough by leaving me that message, apparently he didn’t know that I roll deep. The kid is scared and I will be in contact with his parents shortly so there’s probably no need to continue harassing him. He is already immortalized by the internet as a MORON!

[UPDATE] From Jesse McPherson’s Twitter

i was in shock and not sure how to react, i don’t really believe him but i’ve seen him now and know he’s in the neighborhood #

he said he bought the laptop and he saw his face on the intertnet and was giving it back… #

scared kid just came to my door with the stolen laptop in hand… #

Haha, the kid brought the laptop back. Hmm, what’s happening with the Xbox?

[UPDATE:] I almost forgot that I have proof the mother is lying. Please click on the images to see them larger.

She must think she can hax the internets.

Link to the Xbox live messages and emails on McPherson’s website.

Also I have heard from the detectives, they left a message for me, and will be in contact with them shortly.

So the Philadelphia Police does have an internet connection!

[UPDATE] From Jesse McPherson’s website

So to make things crystal clear so far there are 2 separate people, the person who returned the laptop and is pictured in the original photos posted here, and the person who has the XBOX and most likely sent the original message on XBOX Live, who has made no effort to contact me and return the mechandise. There may be some speculation that the person in the pictures is “Anthony Sheridan”, the person the mother named, I will let you know if that information leads anywhere.

The kid with the Xbox better return it, because it’s his pictures and private information plastered all over the internet. The pictures of guy who stole the laptops was actually kinda blurry.

[UPDATE] Tweets from Jesse McPherson

here’s my big question, how did they know what house to goto? #
and that people need to stop calling his house and him and his friend tried to get me to go outside #
ok im a little scared/nervous right now. some goons just knocked on my door saying everyone has the wrong guy #

Oh, shit! Did he just say Goons?! I’m next! Where the F*** can you buy a P90! But seriously, I’m alot less sympathetic now that the kid sent goons to the guy’s house…

[UPDATE] Tweets from Jesse McPherson

the moms have taken action and I just had a pleseant chat with them #

please remove ****** ****** name and address and phone number from the wiki #

talking to the mom on the phone now #

detetive is on his way #

Wait, moms? As in the plural? I hope McPherson gets his xbox and tv back now.

[UPDATE] Tweets from Jesse McPherson

xbox booted up fine, saved games are in tact #

THE XBOX HAS BEEN RETURNED!! I REPEAT, THE XBOX HAS BEEN RETURNED! #

detectives just left, they have all the info and were very receptive to all the detective work on everyones part #

I will update the blog and end everything once I receive the XBOX #

the doggs needed to be called in in the first place to get this fucker to realize you cant just steal something from someone and think they’ll just forget about it.

diggers unite, and fight for what we think is right. punk little kids that steal peoples hard earned shit to be taught a lesson.

just dont play it down cuz your gonna get ur shit back, press charges man, its the only way the lesson can be learned

someone needs to take all those personal details off that wikidot page. his girlfriend has nothing to do with it and i’m sure he’s going to have a hard time at highschool anyway.

damn, i would not like to be him…..

  8. Isobel C said, on March 23rd, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Oh well, at least it will teach the little boy a lesson on not buying from less-than-trustworthy dealers and then contacting the original owner holding the equipment for ransom.
Even if he didn’t steal it personally, his sheer stupidity has earned him a digg-style ass whoopin’
Maybe next time he will think twice.
After all, what sane person would risk being stuck by the wrath of diggers twice?

Jesse, why do you believe that per se?

I agree that what he did was wrong but posting those kinds of details in public especially regarding his address and about his girlfriend (who is a completely unrelated party) is probably not a good idea. Especially since there are tons of comments I have been reading that are basically death threats. Who knows what some nutjob might do with the information. I think that if he hasn’t already learned his lesson nothing anyone does from this point on will have any effect.

  17. illumnat said, on March 24th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Thing is… “I just bought it off of someone on the street” is most likely just a lie to attempt to get out of being accused as the actual thief. Chances are likely that he stole those items.

Which is more likely? He stole the items, or he just randomly came across “some guy” who just happened to be selling the items?

  18. TeleVision Spy said, on March 24th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

This is about the 4th such case of Digger mob rule, they’ll catch the guy, punish him and then ruin what’s left of his life. It’s en e-mob and lyncing - is it deserved? Partially, but some tend to go a bit crazy.

  19. JesseTall said, on March 24th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Well it definitly seems like the kid in the picture posted above and the security cam pic are the same person. Hell it even looks like hes wearing the same lame ass tshirt that is 4 sizes to big for him. The chain is a dead give away. Id say lock him up, it’ll be the best thing for him. He looks like the kid i just handed my $7 bucks to in the burger king drive through, bastard didn’t even kingsize my fries….

  20. Martin said, on March 24th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I call bullshit on his story. There is no way that he bought it on the street that shortly after it was jacked.

Also when you buy a laptop is the first thing you do take it to the pawn shop? No

Another thing who buys a laptop AND the wrong power adapter?

This kid is full of crap. I say you track him down and beat his ass for the aggravation he caused you. Plus you still need your xbox and tv back.

Maybe the kid had an accomplice and was trying to play it off.

I amnot sure if I think that posting his personal info was that bad.

I also do not believe that he bought it from the guy who stole it

    that is stupid-think about it

why would the actual thief tell himhow to contact the owner? unless there is another way i am missing but hinestly whenever a d-bag gets cught they say

“it wasn’t me” as made famous by shaggy

i say posthis info, let him feelwhat it is like to have your life, your home, your saftely totally violated like he did to the onwer of the stuff that was taken.

you could have been home when he broke in and ended up having to hurt him or being hurt by him

I say humilate him till he changes his name, religion and country of residence!

Sure, you could get sued… until the judge takes a fraction of a second to realize that this moron actually deserves much worse than what he’s gotten and throws out the case.
Just what do you imagine could have happened to this kid had he gotten caught in the act? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Doctrine
His girlfriend will hopefully notice what a douchebag he is and will leave him. His parents had a hand in it too, however indirect, for not having taught him right from wrong. By the way, didn’t he get the money from his mom?
There may well be other ways to handle this.
