Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
Recently I installed Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron, on my (relatively) old toshiba laptop.
I had a few problems with installation where when I installed with the automatic partition it would hang indefinitely when it tried to detect file systems, so I had to do a manual partition. So I I’m hoping it didn’t screw the laptop up.
First impressions? This is awsome! Everything lags on this laptop, and I do mean everything. Clean install xp and you open up word and it’ll start lagging. I think I may be the only person in my area that’s still using 256Mb RAM. Hardware complaints to the side. Ubuntu worked like a charm.
The packaged applications were carefully chosen, the only thing I had to install that I need was BasKet Note Pads. I’m surprised such a full fledge and functioning OS can fit on a single CD.
Initial Gripes: I’m still not used to the top and bottom bars, and it really cuts down on my screen real estate. Actually, I’m going to remove one of them now.
Firefox is largely the same, and actually a bit better. It’s kinda cool how when I enter a password a bar pops up below the URL as opposed to a window in Vista.
If I had a laptop, even one with better hardware. I think I’ll be using Ubuntu, it’s speedy and although initially I was a bit apprehensive about the range of software available, but the repositories have everything I need. Except for CoD 4. Hmm…
I’m still going to use Vista on my desktop though, my crack like addiction of games needs windows.
Hip to Be Square: Oh god, another Superhero Movie
I accidentally stumbled upon this movie while surfing the net. It was in one of those random pop-up adds. Normally, I just close the ad to “Increase my rooster size” (It’s called a cock -Ed) and continue with what I was doing. But when I see the word “Superhero” I’m just drawn in like a dragonfly to… whatever dragonflies eat. Why a dragonfly you ask? Well, this film is centered around the character of Rick Ricker. He’s an ordinary teenager who gets bitten by a radioactive dragonfly on a field trip. Sound familiar? That’s because it’s Spiderman’s origin. He even has an Uncle who gets injured and inspires him. Even though Rick knees him in the crotch while he’s in the middle of the all-important “With great power comes great responsibility” line. What’s that? Spiderman had no crotch kneeing? Well this film is a parody of just about every big superhero movie ever released. X-Men, Spidey, Batman, Fantastic Four, Superman; they all go under the parodying microscope of the creators of “Naked Gun” and “Scary Movie”. With Drake Bell (whom I actually respect; which is saying a lot for a Nickelodeon Actor), Leslie Nielson, and a host of other famous people, this movie promises a lot.
The Hip
Leslie Nielson. All on his own. He’s a plus automatically. He plays Uncle Albert. The trailer includes a great clip of him shooting a random guy in the hand with a nail gun. What’s not to love? Next up, Drake Bell. I mentioned before that I respect the guy. It’s mainly for his work on “The Amanda Show” which I watched religiously when I was younger. It’s still funny now, dig it up on YouTube. He’s a quality actor. As always, I have to mention Special effects. They look good, though I haven’t seen many. This film could be hilarious. A black Professor X fighting with his wife after she found Invisible woman in his closet, people getting hit by large objects, old ladies being fed into wood-chippers. Good times for all. Finally, they make Tom Cruise look like an idiot and then die. Always; and I do mean always; a plus. (more…)
3G iPhone in 60 days?
Omgomgomgomg, 3G iPhone!
I’m not an Apple fan boy, but I want to be.
AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega just dropped some meaty bits. He had mentioned earlier in the event that he expected all of their smart integrated devices to be 3G in the next couple months. Sascha Segan from PC Mag asked it that included the iPhone. De la Vega responded, “Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough.”
Hmm, does he mean release just for the US? Meh, but yay! There’s a 3G iPhone out there, well, coming out.
Walk Mossberg also said in an embedded video on Gizmodo that the 3G iPhone is “coming out in 60 days”, so that mean June 4! ![]()
